The Butterfly Clues focuses on the story of Lo, a girl who, along with her family, is still mourning the death of Oren, her brother. To her dismay, Lo's OCD grows out of control and she instantly finds herself itching to snatch beautiful things for her growing collection. When walking through the flea market, Lo comes across a butterfly pendant and instantly recognizes it as one that was stolen from a murdered teen girl. Lo quickly becomes obsessed with the pendant, and finds herself wanting to get to the bottom of the murder.

I've always loved a good mystery. In fact, I have quite a growing collection of adult and young adult mysteries in my room. There's always been something thrilling and exciting about reading a mystery, I've always found myself instantly pulled into the story and at times have even found myself viewing things easily through the protagonist's perspective. That was my experience with The Butterfly Clues by Kate Ellison. In my opinion, I think that the dialogue behind The Butterfly Clues was absolutely brilliant! It had all the makings of a wonderful mystery; an interesting premise, a set of extraordinary and peculiar characters, and a thick mystery.

Unfortunately, the further I got into The Butterfly Clues, the more I realized how predictable it's story truly was. That, regrettably, ruined what I could have found to be an extraordinary tale. Despite that, The Butterfly Clues still possessed a well defined tale, one with an interesting character like Lo, with an equally interesting personality trait as OCD. However, despite all that, I found myself having quite a few questions by the end of the novel, something I had hoped wouldn't happen.

The Butterfly Clues by Kate Ellison was a fun mystery, one that instantly pulled me in. However, much to my dismay, it didn't leave me hanging by it's every word.

I moved back to my seat and tried to think about what Luna had told me, but quickly grew so sleepy. Even though I tried my hardest to stay awake the last thing I remembered was glancing around in the dark at Luna and James still eating. Joseph had fallen asleep first, and was snoring so loud I easily heard him over the plane’s engines.
A couple hours later I woke up, my head felt like lead, and I had an awful taste in my mouth. It was cold and the wind was blowing. I cracked my eyes open and glanced around. Everyone was still asleep, except the pilot. His seat was empty and the back door was wide open. It took longer than normal for everything to register. I even looked behind me, thinking he might be in the bathroom, before it finally hit me … we had been drugged. “Oh Jesus, Joseph, wake up,” I screamed, but he didn’t budge.
I promptly shot up from my seat wondering why the pilot would bail on us. The suction coming from the open door pulled at me, and I grabbed onto Joseph’s arm.
“Help me,” I shouted, mere inches from his ear. “Joseph, you’ve got to wake up.” I held on with one hand and slapped him hard with the other. Finally, he stirred.
“Oh my God.” Joseph held his hand to his forehead. “My head is killing me."
“Forget about your damn head for a minute, and help me.” My feet weren’t flying in the air or anything, but there was a strong suction pulling me toward the open doorway. I couldn’t hold back my tears any longer. All I could picture was getting sucked out and falling thousands of feet.
I guess Joseph saw my distress and promptly pulled me into his lap. I was so relieved, I threw my arms around his neck and squeezed tightly.
“Shh, you’re all right now.” He held me for a minute until I calmed down, then pushed me back just enough to see my face. “Where’s the pilot?”
“Uh, I’m thinking out there somewhere.” I replied sarcastically, but didn’t mean too, and pointed toward the open door.
Without a word, Joseph sprung into action. He slid out from under me, and carefully made his way to the back where the open door was. I wasn’t sure he’d be able to get it closed. I held my breath as he pulled on the door handle. His face turned deep red as he strained and his muscles flexed. Although I cared deeply for William, watching the taut muscles in Joseph’s chest and abdomen ripple underneath his tight shirt, stirred something deep inside me. He let out a loud grunt and gave a final hard jerk, latching the door.
I ran to him and threw my arms around him. “You were so brave. Thank you.” I kissed him on the cheek before I even thought about it. Afterward, I let go, lowering my eyes. “Uh … we better wake the others.
Joseph had managed to stir Joshua awake, but so far hadn’t had any luck waking Luna and James. I suddenly remembered that they had eaten a good bit more than the rest of us.
“We were drugged. It must have been in the food. That would explain why Luna and James aren’t waking up.” I thought about it all for a minute, then turned to Joshua who’d climbed into the pilot’s seat. “I thought your grandfather knew these people.”

The Genre Needs More Mary Quinn

Truly there is nothing greater than a good mystery. A good mystery that will have you clutching the novel's pages with suspense and wonder, one that will have you begging for more even after it's conclusion. The only mysteries to ever have done that to me have been that of Y.S Lee

In the Traitor in the Tunnel, the third installment in The Agency series, Mary Quinn is sent out by Queen Victoria herself to deal with a delicate matter at Buckingham Palace. You see, there's a thief and it's up to Mary Quinn and her investigative expertise to get to the bottom of things. While Mary catches the eye of the Prince of Wales, deals with a terrible murder, and ponders as to whether or not she can truly be with James, Mary must solve the case before everything is lost.

The Agency series by Y.S Lee truly is an amazing one! It's filled with incredible suspense, history, and romance that will, without a doubt, have you swooning over and over again! Talk about seriously falling in love with it's realistic characters! Mary Quinn is certainly a character that any female reader can easily connect with and read. Mary, as a whole, has always been a vibrant and realistic character, with a fierce and determined spirit that would make anyone cheer in absolute joy and approval.

Though, let's not forget to mention Y.S Lee's incredible setting for the series - 1800's London! What I've noticed, and have absolutely loved, about Y.S Lee's writing is how true she is to the time period with spot-on descriptions that have you feeling like you're in the era yourself. The Traitor in the Tunnel, The Agency series' latest installment, is no exception to the rule. The drama, descriptions, and intensity of this installment are higher and stronger then ever before...and I absolutely loved it! Y.S Lee, don't you ever stop!

If you adore mysteries, love romance, and can't get enough of a strong protagonist, The Agency series' latest "The Traitor in the Tunnel" is an absolute must read! If you've yet to read the first two installments in this series, I highly recommend you do so immediately!

Firstly, I think the cover for Tiger Lily is absolutely gorgeous! It's entrancing, poetic - just absolutely perfect! Not to mention that the story sounds so uber exciting! This is one you absolutly must look forward to, without a doubt! I mean, come on, TIGER LILY AND PETER PAN!!

Third novel in Firelight series gets a "Fiery" cover!

Aside my fandom over Peter Pan (as I mentioned before..I have many!), Dragons are also something I've always loved! With that said, it's pretty much a given that I'd be a majorly big fan of Sophie Jordan's Firelight series (if you haven't read it yet, do so soon!). After loving and devouring both Firelight and Vanish, the first two installments in the series, I absolutely cannot wait for Hidden. Today, Sophie Jordan revealed the cover for Hidden, the third novel in the series, and I must say...I APPROVE! Be sure to add it to your Goodreads to-read shelf! It's coming from HarperTeen on September 11th!

Serious cover love for Foretold!

The Demon Trappers series by Jana Oliver absolutely has to be one of my favorites in the paranormal genre! If you're a fan of Supernatural(TVshow) then this series is an absolute must read! When the cover was revealed on Foretold, I was surprised. I wasn't even aware that there would be a four novel, I assumed that there would only be three titles entirely in the series. However, it's wonderful to know that Jana Oliver has a fourth coming out this summer! Be sure to add it to your Goodreads to-read shelf and expect it in stores August 2012 from Macmillan!

Absolutely Captivating and Heart Wrenching!

Ever read a novel so emotional that it continues to tug at your heart strings days after reading it? Someone Else's Life, for me, is that novel!

Someone Else's Life tells the story of Rosie, a girl who has recently lost her more to Huntington's Disease. When Rosie begins to tell Aunt Sarah that she wants to be tested, a terrible truth is revealed. You see, Trudie, Rosie's mother, wasn't really her mother at all. In fact, she was switched at birth! Completely devastated, Rosie leaves with her ex-boyfriend during his gap year and travels with him, beginning to learn more about herself and of the only family she's every known.

Katie Dale's characters were absolutely wonderful! Rosie, the main protagonist in Someone Else's Life, completely captivated me! She was realistically vibrant and her personality easily shone through it's pages. I sympathized her, cried with her, and hoped for the absolute best. She was a character that got the best of me, something I really hate to admit, but I can't help loving the fact that a character actually managed to do this to me.

Moving forward, Someone Else's Life is surprisingly told through two key point of views, that of both Rosie and Holly. To be quite honest, I never really connected, or rather cared, for Holly. For the most part, Rosie's story was far too strong and captivating and I just couldn't stand to be torn away from it. Unfortunately, that was Holly's biggest downfall. Additionally, one of the things I loved most about Someone Else's Life wasn't just the character interaction or it's vivid emotions. It was the fact that Katie Dale tackled Huntington's Disease and created an inspiring and heart wrenching tale that not only opened my eyes but also my heart. Without a doubt, readers will find the same thing happening to them when they devour this novel in hopefully one sitting.

Someone Else's Life by Katie Dale was emotional, fearless, and completely heart wrenching! It is, without a doubt, a novel that will blow you away!

Wendy's Thoughts:

Inbetween by Tara Fuller certainly sounds like a novel I'd enjoy! Since reading and absolutely loving Rachel Vincent's Soul Screamers series, I've had the biggest fangirlish fandom over reapers! Inbetween sounds very promising and I can't wait to read it! Unfortunately, I'm not the biggest fan of the cover (that's me delivering my honest opinion). The stock photo of the girl is alright, but the cover overall comes across a little plain. I'm also not a very big fan of the green text, which doesn't really mesh very well with the cover photo overall. However, that is just one person's opinion!

The Awesome Begins with Embrace!

It was, literally, impossible to mask my enthusiasm when I heard that Sourcebooks Fire would be bringing Jessica Shirvington's The Violet Eden Chapters to North America! Until that point, I had only what Australian readers were saying about the series, and it was enough to make me anxious to get my hands on it. When I received a copy for review, several months before the gorgeous cover was even revealed, I couldn't wait to dive into it and finally discover what Australian readers were hyping about.

It starts with a whisper:

“It’s time for you to know who you are…”

Embrace begins with the introduction of Violet Eden, a seemingly average teen girl who dreads the arrival of her seventeenth birthday, which by the way also marks the anniversary of her mother's death. When Violet suddenly begins to have disturbing dreams, some of which mark her, she begins to wonder about their origin. Could they possibly mean something more? What Violet finds, however, is something she never expected. A war centuries-old between fallen angels and those who protect humanity, and secrets about herself that she never would have thought possible.

Right from the beginning, I knew that Jessica Shirvington's Embrace would be a novel I'd enjoy! Jessica's writing instantly pulled me in, enveloping me in the world she created. Upon Violet's introduction I instantly found myself perplexed. I wasn't quite sure what to think of her at first. She seemingly irritated me beyond anything I'd previously experienced, yet I somehow found myself connecting and sympathizing her. Violet was, without a doubt, a visibly flawed character, no where near perfection. However, something admirable about her was her determination. Though, with that said, her lack of understanding and emotional instability was her biggest downfall.

I LOVE PHOENIX BEST!

Paws off, ladies. I said he's mine!

Despite my lack of love for Violet, I found myself loving Lincoln and Phoenix. You know what, scratch that - I LOVED PHOENIX BEST! Lincoln, as charming as he was, wasn't someone I found appealing. His overprotective personality came across as sheepish and controlling, while Phoenix's laid back personality came across as freeing. Minor Spoiler: However, with both their introductions to the story, I think it pretty obvious that readers realize that this does indeed quickly turn into a love triangle. Like countless young adult readers, I too tend to be quite wary of love triangles. In fact, I usually prefer to stay away from them if they are mentioned in the synopsis. For the most part they aren't always approached in a positive light, some at times bordering emotional abuse. However, in this case, I didn't quite see it to be an issue in Embrace. Though, that isn't to say that it possibly won't be in future installments, one can only hope for the best.

Jessica Shirvington's first installment in the Violet Eden Chapters, Embrace, had an interesting and unique take on angel lore that instantly pulled me in. Young adult readers will find themselves loving Jessica's characters, connecting with them, and begging for the next installment immediately! Luckily, readers will only have to wait until September 2012 for Enticed, Embrace's sequel!

Angels Have A Pecking Order

Researching for EMBRACE, I discovered the entire subject of Angelology to be truly fascinating. In the end, I chose to go with the most popular theory, that there are 3 choirs of angels and within each choir, 3 ranks.

At the top of the angel hierarchy sit the Seraphim. They are the angels that are supposed to burn with an all-consuming white flame and who perform the all-important role of maintaining the source of Existence within the physical world.

Following the Seraphim come the Cherubim, and Thrones. I always like the descriptions of the Thrones – bringers of justice.

In the second choir are Powers, Dominations and Virtues. And in the third choir – Principalities, Archangels and Angels (guardians).

In writing EMBRACE, discovering each of these ranks and their purpose on earth was what led to the development of my characters powers. Each character is specifically placed within a rank of angels and then given powers accordingly. For example: Griffin is parented by a Seraph angel, meaning he is a leader and his unique power is a mind power (that of reading and delivering truth) to correlate with the description of the Seraphim’s function in the universe. It is a great way of keeping order to the power pool!

Each angelic rank also has a different appearance and different color that represent them and I found this really interesting. Any time I describe an angelic image, it relates back to this research in some way. Additionally, combining this research with things like the Chakra has led me to the use of color as a representation of power and also gemstones as a link to old mythology. For example: Phoenix’s hair is like opal – so black that it shimmers with purple and it catches the light exposing streaks of dazzling silver. First, I loved the idea of his hair being different, but also, it linked to the significance to his power, and his heritage in the story.

Basing the story around the bones of angel mythology and hierarchy gives me a solid structure to use as my foundation. It anchors the story and gives me direction any time I think the story might be straying.

Also, it allowed me to develop one of the big mysteries within the series: what rank is Violet from?

I absolutely LOVE the cover for Embers & Echoes! It's beautiful and it still follows the theme of it's predecessor. The premise for Embers sounds very promising, I'm really looking forward to August 2012!

The Exciting Sequel to The Iron Thorn

Admittedly so, I hadn't instantly fallen in love with The Iron Thorn, the first installment in Caitlin Kittredge's The Iron Codex series. Despite my absolute love for the world Caitlin had created, there were a few things that didn't settle very well for me. Firstly, the protagonist Aoife. Despite being the protagonist, you'd think I would have found myself connecting with her instantaneously. Unfortunately, I didn't and found that to be one of The Iron Thorn's greatest downfalls. Secondly, the novel's events. Though some were, at times, quite predictable, I still found myself a little confused when I got to the end. Fortunately, after diving into The Nightmare Garden, some of the confusion dissipated.

Diving into The Nightmare Garden, the second installment in The Iron Codex series, I found myself once again falling for Caitlin's writing. Caitlin, without a doubt, is quite imaginative and it easily shows through her writing and world building. I was once again reintroduced to Aoife, who unfortunately still hasn't shown very much growth since the last I read her. Regrettably, I was hoping that she'd have matured since The Iron Thorn, hopefully learned from the mistakes she made previously. Aoife, to my dismay, still came across as a character with lack of better judgment, leading me to continue with my struggle of somehow finding a way to connect with her. Fortunately though, the secondary characters showed immense growth, in particular Cal.

Throughout The Nightmare Garden, I discovered how significantly different the mood was from that of The Iron Thorn. Admittedly, the entire series does initially have a dark and supernatural feel to it. However, the emotion in The Nightmare Garden was so much more vibrant and potent, something that instantly pulled me into the story. With that said, readers and fans of the series should expect quite a few surprising twists and turns from Caitlin Kittredge.

The Nightmare Garden is the exciting sequel to The Iron Thorn by Caitlin Kittredge. Fans of the supernatural and steam punk will certainly find themselves enjoying this installment far more then it's predecessor.

Sophie Kinsella's Latest is Absolutely Wonderful!

To be quite frank, I haven't had the most positive of experiences reading Sophie Kinsella's previous novels, most recently Confessions of a Shopaholic. I could never mesh or connect with the characters, understand their actions or personalities, and it was always so heartbreaking having to put down the title. However, when Lindsey from Random House Canada recommended the novel, calling it

".....a hilarious and heartwarming novel about cellphones, engagements and missed connections"

, I knew I had to give it a try!

Sophie Kinsella's latest tells the story of Poppy Wyatt, a woman who is about to be married to her ideal man. Unfortunately, after an outing with the girls, Poppy does the unimaginable - she loses track of the expensive engagement ring her fiancee Magnus has given her! Worse off, his parents are coming to visit and will expect to see the ring! Unfortunately, the drama doesn't stop there for Poppy when her purse is also snatched along with her cell phone. However, after stumbling into her hotel, delirious and shocked from the entire ordeal, Poppy comes across an abandoned phone and decides to use it. From there she seemingly connects with businessman Sam Roxton, who wants the company phone back.

As I mentioned earlier on in my review, I've had terrible luck with Sophie Kinsella's previous novels. Truthfully, it was Lindsey who convinced me with her short recommendation to pick up the title and review it. Fortunately, she was spot on! Upon diving into the novel I quickly found myself identifying with Poppy Wyatt, a witty and some-what antsy character who unexpectedly grows quite a bit throughout the novel. Additionally, I found myself loving Sam Roxton's tight lipped and stern personality despite how off-putting it was upon his introduction. In fact, some of my most favorite moments were when Poppy and Sam spoke to one another. It was fun seeing how they interacted with each other, which at times would shift between being either unbelievably awkward or unexpectedly comfortable. Now that I think of it, the entire novel somehow reminded me briefly of Bridget Jones' Diary, not because of the events or the novel's direction but more so because of it's characters.

Sophie Kinsella's latest, I've Got Your Number, was absolutely wonderful! Highly recommended for young adults and adults alike who need a fun and romantic read. Sophie Kinsella's latest, I've Got Your Number, will surely not disappoint!

Hello Sophie! Let's start off by telling your readers a little about yourself, perhaps something they don't already know about you?

Hello! It's nice to 'cyber-chat'!
I am slightly obsessive, much like my heroines. I get obsessed by my current book, by new ideas, by diets or recipes or fashion trends, or just some ridiculous craze. At the moment I'm having a bird obsession. I've bought a bird-print top, a wind-up singing bird in a cage, a lampshade with birds on it, bird earrings… you get the picture!

What's a day like in the life of Sophie Kinsella?

My days are so varied! It depends whether I'm writing, promoting or on holiday...

I'll tell you about a writing day. I take my son to school, then walk into our local village. The fifteen minute stretch helps me to clear my head. I grab the same takeaway coffee every morning, then head to my office, switch on my computer and start to write. I aim to write 1,000 words - then I'm done. Sometimes it takes only an hour or two, sometimes several hours, sometimes all day… and some days I have to admit defeat! If I'm on a roll I'll just carry on till the scene or chapter is finished. Then I head home, play with the little ones, greet my older sons when they arrive back from school and enter into the mayhem that is family life. Sometimes, when the younger children are in bed, I head back to the computer and tinker with what I've written that day. As I say, it gets kind of obsessive!

You're go-to read when you're feeling down?

The Diary of a Provincial Lady by E M Delafield. It's an incredibly funny book written in the 30s in diary form, so you can dip in and out for a quick, feelgood fix.

What inspired you to write a novel about cellphones, footnotes, and romance?

One of the starting points for the novel was noticing how my friends and I use our phones all the time and have our entire lives on them - from texts to voicemail messages to photos to emails. My phone feels like my world. I've also always loved the idea of two strangers being connected in some random way, and so my next inspiration was the idea: what if you found a stranger's phone? What would it tell you about that person? Where could a connection like that lead to? The story unfolded pretty quickly after that.

Do you have any news/plans on your next project?

I'm on maternity leave at the moment, having had a baby a few weeks ago, but then I will be writing a new stand-alone book. I can't reveal anything about it at the moment except that I'm thinking about it all the time as I feed the baby and really looking forward to it!

Hello Aya, how about introducing yourself?

Oh. Well, hello. My name is Aya Tanaka. I’m 16 years old. It’s very nice to meet you.

Any quirky habits?

I suppose I do have a few. *blushes* I tend to hide behind my hair a lot. Also, because I take care of my little brother, I sometimes do motherly things for my friends…like offer to blow on their food to cool it down. It’s kind of embarrassing…

Your favorite book?

Little Women. I always wanted to be like Amy, all pretty with blonde curls and so worldly, traveling through Europe. I mean…I don’t want to be a brat like she was when she was young, but..I mean she ends up with Laurie. I would have wanted to end up with Laurie…

Your favorite movie?

The Princess Bride! I wonder if I can convince Gabe to say “as you wish”…

Your favorite traditional Japanese meal?

Shabu-shabu. It’s not something we ate often, but I have fond memories of eating it with my family on special occasions. Besides, it’s a funny name. *giggles* Shabu-shabu means swish-swish, like how you swish the meat in the boiling dashi broth to cook it.

Ice cream flavor? Mine's chocolate!

Red bean. It’s tastier than it sounds.

What's a typical Friday night for you?

A typical Friday night used to be staying in and playing a board game with my little brother Toji, but now I’ll normally go to a movie or the diner with Gabe and Mari and Jackson. It’s nice to have friends to do things with.

If Gabe were a cupcake, what flavor would he be?

*eyes wide* Oh! Umm…something sweet maybe a bit spicy. Like a chocolate cupcake with cayenne pepper in it or something.

First thoughts on the mysterious "new guy"?

He was really pale and kind of scary with those intense green eyes…but then you look again and he just looks sad. Like a lost puppy. I’m a sucker for lost puppies…

What's your idea of happiness?

Happiness is being able to spend time with those you love. You never know what the future will bring or who might be gone tomorrow…

Your thoughts on near death experiences and how they change a person:

Well obviously, they’re scary! Not so much during, things normally happen too fast, but after? It’s hard to stop the shaking and the “what ifs”. The only plus about them is that I think they teach you to try to live life to the fullest. Appreciate what you have and those around you because like I said, you don’t know who might be gone tomorrow…

What are your quirky writing or reading habits? I can't read at night without a glass of milk!

I love that! Personally, I write best when I have a Starbucks latte with me – preferably a pumpkin spice latte with extra whip. Yum!

Deadly Cool featured a exciting mystery and death by Ipod earbuds. Your upcoming novel and companion to Deadly Cool, Social Suicide, now features "Twittercide". Explain?

Twittercide is the act of being killed (a homicide) while tweeting on Twitter. In Social Suicide, one of the characters, unfortunately dies by Twittercide. What a way to go, right?

What sort of excitement can your readers expect in Social Suicide?

Beyond the Twittercide, we have break-in’s, stake-out’s, and a mystery revolving around a cheating ring at Herbert Hoover High school, where Hartley currently works as a reporter on the school newspaper. In addition to trying to figure out who is behind the cheating ring, Hartley also finds herself trying to figure out her own emotions toward her bad boy editor, Chase Erikson.

Readers of Deadly Cool instantly fell for bad-boy editor Chase. Can we expect more Chase in Social Suicide? Anything swoon-worthy in the cards?

Of course! I kinda have a thing for Chase, too, so I couldn’t leave him out of the fun. Let’s just say that Chase and Hartley get a little closer in this next book – both literally and figuratively!

Any news you'd like to share on your upcoming projects?

I’m super excited about a new series debuting in hardcover in March, called Play Nice. It’s about a former assassin trying to make good, but she finds out that going straight isn’t as easy as she’d hoped. I had a lot of fun writing a bad girl sort of character (even though I swear she has good intentions!), so I’m very excited for readers to get to know her, too.

Anne Rice in Toronto at the Bram & Bluma Appel Salon Recap

There's no way that I can effectively describe how excited I was for Anne Rice's Toronto visit! Seriously, I've been an uber fan of Anne for the longest time, literally fangirling over the glorious Lestat day in and day out. In fact, my high school's book club worshipped the vampire chronicles. Truly, doesn't that paint enough of a picture of how excited I was to be attending her event?!

Yesterday morning...I was beyond anxious! I couldn't wait to leave work and make my way to the Toronto Reference Library on Yonge street and finally meet one of my all-time favorite authors. Finally the time came and I met up with the wonderful Michele @ Just A Lil' Lost. Fortunately enough we were early enough to buy coffee. Entering the library and making our way upstairs, we found the line up. I was actually pretty impressed that so many people were already there waiting in line. In line I finally got to meet Andrea (@Book_lover1988) *it was wonderful meeting you!*. After waiting in line for, frankly, not very long, we were finally ushered into the Bram & Bluma Appel Salon. We quickly made our way inside and found some comfortable seats in the fourth row, at which point Christa @ Hooked on Books caught up with us and secured a seat as well.

Waiting for the event to begin, Michele and I headed over to the cash bar. Michele actually bought me an early birthday drink (hurray for early birthday drinks!) To be quite honest...I have no idea what it's called...BUT IT WAS DELISH! Thanks, Michele *cheers*

After enjoying our drinks, and running into and catching up with Lindsey from RH, we made our way back to our seats and waited for the event to begin. A few minutes passed...and things were underway! We were first told of the Toronto Reference Library's upcoming events and then were introduced to the wonderful Mary Hynes from CBC, who would be interviewing Anne Rice throughout the event.

I absolutely loved how cool and collected Mary Hynes was sitting next to Anne Rice. As an uber fan girl I highly doubt that I'd have been able to keep my cool. Imagine squeeing....a lot of it...that would be me.

Mary Hynes' questions were spot on, giving Anne Rice room to roam around and talk about her latest novel, The Wolf Gift, while also delving into her older titles and experiences.

It was an absolutely fun experience sitting there and listening to Anne's responses, she had a wonderful sense of humor! After answering a few audience questions, it was time to make our way to the signing table.

Finally, it was my turn in line...and I got to meet Anne Rice! Surprisingly the line wasn't as slow as I had predicted. Things actually moved quite quickly.

Overall, I had an amazing time! It was so wonderful to finally meet the amazing Anne Rice!

An Exotic Setting and Lore That Instantly Pulls You In

Kai Meyer is one author that I've been vastly aware of for quite some time. In the past, I recall being told about several of his novels, though all in German, and had always been curious about what exactly made Kai Meyer such an enthralling author. It wasn't until I received a copy of Arcadia Awakens, a translation of his novel Arkadien erwacht, that I truly discovered the incredible detail and imagination that this author possesses.

Arcadia Awakens tells the story of Rosa Alcantara, a snarky woman with an attitude that could tear you apart like mince meat. Leaving her not-so-glamorous life in Brooklyn, Rosa makes the move to the beautiful streets of Sicily, where her family is closely connected to the mafia. There she meets Alessandro Carnevare, who's unbelievably gorgeous and dangerous. You see, he's the son of a powerful Sicilian Mafia family, one that's been enemy to that of the Alcantaras for years. With her move to Sicily, Rosa never expects to uncover secrets that both the Alcantaras and the Carnevares have kept securely hidden for centuries.

Romance That Makes You Swoon and Sigh

I AM IN LOVE! No, seriously, I am in love with Arcadia Awakens. Coming across a novel that moves you so much that you fan girl about it (and literally won't keep quiet about) only happens on the rare occasion, and for me it's been a while. For a novel that I fell so in love with, it started off on the wrong foot. Beginning Arcadia Awakens was a hassle, a drag, an absolute chore. The first few chapters dragged on for a very long time, introducing the protagonist Rosa Alcantare, who by the way was not very appealing at all in the beginning. However, moving further into the novel I discovered that it's sluggish and uneventful pace cleared up, lifting the cloud of confusion that the first several chapters had created.

The history and lore within Arcadia Awakens is completely captivating. It grabs your interest and makes you want to learn more. In fact, some of the lore you'll encounter will bring about twists and turns that you never would have predicted, I know I certainly didn't. For most of the novel, I tried to grasp what exactly made Arcadia Awakens a paranormal novel. However, after moving through the mafia-related drama, I was quite surprised to discover what it's paranormal twist was!

The romance - Arcadia Awakens has it! The clued in relationship between Alessandro and Rosa was one that easily pulled me in. Alessandro was an instant hit for me, his appealing personality would surely do in any swooning female reader. With that said, I feel it best to mention that I was a little put off by his hot and cold mood when he was first introduced in the story, despite his instant appeal. However, moving further into the novel, I found myself loving how much he grew as a character, by accepting responsibility and growing from it.

With that said, I found Arcadia Awakens to be an intriguing, exciting, heartwarming, and refreshing paranormal read. Young adult and adult readers alike will, without a doubt, find themselves highly anticipating the sequel, I know I am!

The Story and Characters Pack a Serious Punch!

I have yet to read a novel that compares to the unique approach of Erin Saldin's The Girls of No Return. There certainly has never been anything quite like this one before, especially with Erin Saldin's attention grabbing and pulling writing. Readers beware, what you'll stumble into with The Girls on No Return is a story that has a serious shock factor and punch, literally!

The Girls of No Return by Erin Saldin tells the story of Lida, a girl who is forced to go to Alice Marshall, where she meets Gia, Boone and Jules. Diving into the novel, I discovered that the author organized the story in a very unique way. Each chapter began with a snippet of the epilogue, allowing me to better connect with Lida as the protagonist of the story. Speaking of Lida, despite connecting with her I can't quite say that I enjoyed reading from her perspective. At the beginning she sounded like a very promising character, someone with spunk and a deep personality, however the further I got in the less I sympathized with her, though it wasn't for lack of trying.

Moving on, I found that the story packed a wonderful realism, which at times tackled real teen issues and emotions. Erin Saldin did a fantastic job bringing out her character's emotions with emphasized realism. Additionally, I couldn't help falling for Erin's wonderful cast of secondary characters. Despite their aloofness, I found myself connecting with them far more then I did with Lida. They were vastly different, personality-wise, and were excellent contrasts to one another. Lastly, I absolutely adored Erin Saldin's writing and language in The Girls of No Return, though regrettably it took me quite a bit of time to adjust to it.

The Girls of No Return by Erin Saldin was a straight forward, emotional, and interesting story. Contemporary readers will certainly find themselves enjoying the dialogue and it's characters.

A Fantastic Romantic Thriller!

Being a young adult review blogger, I don't typically read many adult novels aside from a few select beloved series and authors. However, when I was pitched the premise of Karen Robard's latest, Sleepwalker, I knew it was one steamy read that I absolutely could not pass up!

Meet Micayla Lange, a cop who's stubborn, fierce, and intuitive. While house sitting her uncle Nicco's gigantic mansion, Micayla hears a strange noise coming from her uncle's office in the middle of the night. Always on her guard, Micayla makes her way to the room only to discover a group of men ransacking it. Unexpectedly, Micayla is taken as a hostage by Jason Davis, a man who steals things for a living, and becomes involved in something much bigger then she anticipated.

Sleepwalker by Karen Robards was a fantastic romantic thriller! I swooned, I sighed, and I whooped with excitement. That, unfortunately, doesn't happen to me very often when reading adult novels, mostly because they tend to be quite cliche in the romantic department. However, with Karen Robard's protagonists Micayla and Jason, I loved how different they were personality-wise. Micayla, being the fierce and reputable cop that she is, was a character I quickly related and connected. She was real and observant, someone who carefully thought things through. Jason was someone I wasn't quite sure of at first. I'm never a lover of bad body facades, though moving further into the novel I found myself understanding him and his motives quite a bit.

Sleepwalker by Karen Robards is, by far, one of my absolute favorite romantic thrillers to this date! Highly recommended to adults who love fast-paced action and suspense with a twist of romance.

Random House of Canada Blogger Love Fest Recap

As some of my blog readers might recall, a few weeks ago in my "In My Mailbox" post I mentioned some of the wonderful bookish events I'd be attending this month here in Toronto. One of them was kept secret, where I mentioned that I'd be attending a blogger love party hosted by one of my all-time favorite publishers. The event host: The wonderful staff at Random House of Canada!

A few weeks ago we were all invited to an exclusive event, hosted by Random House of Canada, via email. The details;

(Pixelated the contact information because I didn't want that being shared online).

I think it's fair to say that after receiving the invite, we were all pretty curious to discover who exactly these "special guests" truly were. Then...we got to counting down to the event. (I seriously marked it off day by day on my calender...I was that excited!) Finally Saturday February 11th arrived!

I met up with my fellow Toronto book blogettes Michele (Just A Lil' Lost), Nicole (All I Ever Read), Angel (Mermaid Vision Books) and Christa (Hooked on Books) at a downtown Starbucks. From there we directly headed to the event location; Random House HQ!

Epic name tag is epic!

Walking into the office we were warmly greeted by Random House of Canada staff, including the wonderful Lindsey! *I heart Lindsey, serious I do!* After a light chat, we were escorted into the board room where us Ontario blog squadies literally DOMINATED one side of the table. (Yeah, you heard me...DOMINATED!) While taking my seat...I met the love of my life.. (well, he was for that brief moment)

Lindsey then went ahead and started her presentation, speaking of Random House of Canada's immense love for book bloggers. The slide show consisted of reviewer quotes and fun sneak peaks on upcoming novels, which Lindsey made me super excited for! In fact, there's on particular novel (One Good Hustle by Billie Livingston) that sparked quite a bit of interest in me. By the way, Lindsey's "Party Rock Anthem" jig would have sold this book to anyone!

The Ontario Blog Squad, to which I'm a part of, were also thanked for last year's Ontario Book Blogger Meet. If you attended, you'll remember that Lindsey was invited to attend and Random House of Canada was a big supporter of the meet! A big thanks to Lindsey for the shout out!

After Lindsey's wonderful presentation, we all dispersed and gathered ourselves some bookish pretties, to which I'll share a photo at the end of this recap.

Alchemy Kicks Butt!

Young adult fantasy titles are one of the most I enjoy reading, so it shouldn't be much of a surprise that Avery Williams' debut The Alchemy of Forever was an absolute must read for me. With an interesting and mysterious premise as Alchemy of Forever's, I was very curious to see how things would turn out. The Alchemy of Forever starts off with the introduction of Seraphina Ames, a sophisticated young lady just now being introduced to society. In London 1349, it all starts for Seraphina with a romantic encounter with the apothecary's son, Cyrus. Unfortunately, something unexpected happens, ending with Seraphina just barely clinging to life. With no other choice, Cyrus uses a method of alchemy that is used to take over another human's body. The result - everlasting life.

Coming to one's senses; sometimes it takes a long time to finally figure out that what you're doing is just plain wrong. Seraphina, Alchemy's protagonist, was just that. After years of ignorance, the guilt finally starts to sink in for Seraphina and she begins to regret having to kill just to live. Sera, unlike other characters in the fantasy genre, was fairly low key. She was quiet but fierce, stubborn but compliant. She was a balance of both the negative and positive, something I never thought I'd find appealing in character until Sera. She had a fun narrative voice that greatly showed her sophistication and ignorance, something I couldn't help enjoying because of it's unique approach.

Speaking of unique approaches, I was fairly enamored by Avery Williams' approach to alchemy and use of it in The Alchemy of Forever. The idea of being able to "body hop" to live forever was very interesting. Unfortunately, as engrossed as I was in the idea of living forever with the use of alchemy, it unfortunately didn't have a strong history to back it up. [Spoiler: It's history, in fact, was slightly loose with only the mention of the elixir being created to save his father during the black plague.] I, as a reader, would have much more preferred to have learned a lot more. Unfortunately, the focus on it was short lived, however I hold great hope in Avery Williams possibly approaching it's history further more in the following installment.

To be quite honest, The Alchemy of Forever greatly lacks the promised action and drama one would gather from it's synopsis. I'd prefer to see it as a story about development, one that slowly builds up the somewhat short history of Cyrus and the Incarnates. Although, despite the lacking drama and action, I still found myself quite enjoying The Alchemy of Forever. I typically lean towards novels that have me guessing and on the edge of my seat right to the end, but Alchemy surprisingly managed to grab hold of my attention instantly. I was enamored with what Incarnates were and how they were created. In addition, I couldn't help hoping for Sera's complete success at freeing herself from killing further just to live longer.

The Alchemy of Forever by Avery Williams held a unique use and approach to alchemy that quickly captured me. In addition, Alchemy's protagonist, Seraphina, was far more different then any other character I'd read before. Readers who love fantasy novels with a twinge of romance and self-discovery will find themselves enjoying The Alchemy of Forever.

Yes, I'm super excited for my upcoming birthday, more so then I usually am because it's my golden birthday! I'll be turning 23 on the 23rd! Eep! What I want for my birthday? Anything related to cupcakes (that includes bookmarks, t-shirts, little trinkets) and of course...BOOKS!

In Too Deep is Full of Impact!

In Too Deep by Amanda Grace, pen name for author Mandy Hubbard, was an absolute must read when I stumbled upon it's synopsis while browsing Goodreads. In Too Deep tells the dramatic and emotional story of Sam, a girl, who without putting much thought into the situation, unleashes an incomprehensible chain of events that lead the students at her school into believing that she was raped by Carter Davis, a guy she made a pass at but got rejected.

Firstly, before reading In Too Deep, I'd only read one novel by Mandy Hubbard, that being Ripple, a novel that gently fell into the fantasy genre and not the realistic. I wasn't quite sure what to expect from her in terms of contemporary YA, so I was curious to see how she'd pull things off. With In Too Deep, I was very impressed! It's not everyday that you read a realistic fiction title that is, in it's full name, REALISTIC! The events that take place in this novel don't develop exactly as you'd expect, bringing forth the realism of unpredictable decision making to an all time high.

With that said, it's easy to imagine that I'd instantly become infuriated with a character like Sam. Her decision making was poor with very little thought behind it. Firstly, as a reader I ask you this, if you were caught in the same situation as Sam, with several students thinking you were raped when in fact you weren't, wouldn't you slam down the rumors and make it clear that it never happened? Wouldn't it be in your best interest to do so, and the best interest in the person being falsely accused? My answer: Yes, I would slam down those rumors. It's the very fact that she continued the false pretence that made me frustrated and agitated. However, as I pointed out before, it's that very aspect of the story and Sam's character that made this story vivid. As much as we'd hate to believe it, there are people out there who would go along with claims like that.

Overall, I found that the novel had an overwhelming feel of Degrassi (the television show, if you've ever watched it). The drama, the characters, the entire series of events and life lessons learned through this novel all pulled me in. Readers, if you enjoy contemporary novels that focus on the real, you'll want to pick up yourself a copy of In Too Deep by Amanda Grace.

Raz0rbill Launch Party Recap

Months ago, summer 2011 to be precise, I along with several other bloggers were invited to Penguin Canada Headquarters for discussion on the upcoming Razorbill launch and website. On February 8th, several people came together to celebrate the official launch of the Razorbill imprint in Canada, along with the site!

The event was hosted by the staff of Razorbill at The Bait Shop, located at Queen and Dufferin. Upon walking to the venue with my fellow book blogettes (the blogettes being Michele, Nicole, Evie, Christa, and Angel) we found ourselves at the end of a dark and rather spooky looking alley way. Now, I know what you're thinking, "What on earth were you girls doing at the end of an alley AT NIGHT?!" Don't worry, our adventure doesn't end there. At the end of the alley we were greeted by one of the staff, who directed us down the alley, which was oddly enough lined with lit candles. Finally, we made it to the door!

So I opened the door and found....

*re-wind* I think it best to mention at this point that I mentioned, on the way to the launch, that there better be cupcakes or I'd be very unhappy. Why do I mention this? Because....IT WAS ABSOLUTE IRONY that when we walked in....this was there!

Yes, that's a giant van...of cupcakes.

That, my frosting-covered pretties, is my DREAM CAR!

I kid you not I had plans in work to steal that vehicle and make it mine. They fell through, unfortunately, when I got tired. Pity, that van and I....it was meant to be! When we finally put our coats away, I solemnly stepped up to the van and took a photo.

After being subjected to posing in front of the van for photos, thanks to the blogettes, we made our way upstairs, grabbed ourselves a glass of white wine, and mingled with the attendees. It was absolutely wonderful meeting everyone, I actually met quite a few faces I'd only spoken to via Twitter. Unfortunately I can't remember every one's Twitter handles and names but I did finally get a chance to meet Lesley Livingston, author of Once Every Never, and Jacqueline @Book_Obsession

An hour into the launch party and speakers appeared on stage, talking about the website and bringing the Razorbill imprint to Canada.

We were also told that we could add to a story that all attendees were writing and get a free Razorbill t-shirt. Myself, along with Christa and Brenna, slowly made our way to the laptop and got to writing! Truthfully, we quickly shifted something that was SUPPOSED to be a zombie story to one of shape shifters....and then time travel. Don't ask =P I'm not sure what came of the story, but I'm hoping they'll put it up on the Razorbill website soon for everyone to read!

A Heartbreaking Story Filled With Hope

In the past, I recall being recommended Phoebe Stone's Deep Down Popular quite a few times. I'd heard praises for the emotional novel, and praises for it's author's beautiful and identifying writing. Though I'd never given Deep Down Popular a try, mostly because the premise didn't appeal to my personal taste, I did come across the pitch for her upcoming novel The Boy on Cinnamon Street, a novel, unlike Deep Down Popular, who's premise hooked me in instantly!

The Boy on Cinnamon Street tells the story of Louise, aka Thumbelina, a short seventh grader who's helplessly felt lost and disconnected since the loss of her mother. Living with her adorably fun and supportive grandparents, Louise finds herself struggling to regain suppressed memories of her mother, as well as moving on. One day, after getting a pizza delivered to her house by Benny, a delivery boy, Louise finds a note on her doorstep simply stating "I'm your biggest fan". With supportive friends Reni and Henderson, Louise finally begins to heal and learn more about herself.

Truly, could Phoebe Stone's protagonist Louise be any more adorable?! Louise is, without a doubt, one character all girls can expect to easily connect with. She was open, fun, and honest. Though, despite her positive side, Louise also held a cold and heartbreaking struggle that shook me in ways I hadn't predicted. After suffering the loss of her mother and moving in with her grandparents, Louise has felt cold and disconnected from the outside world. As a reader, I found myself clinging to that emotion, understanding what the young girl was going through. Anyone who's lost someone very special at a young age can easily associate with that feeling, and I loved how Phoebe Stone vividly described the experience.

I Loved Henderson!

As for Reni and Henderson, Reni was a fun sub-character that meshed wonderfully with Louise's mellow personality. Reni was wild, enthusiastic, and completely Bieber obsessed (a genuine Bieber stalker in the making, swear!). Despite being a wild character, it was wonderful to see how easily Reni ran to the aid of her friend, it was unbelievably heartwarming. As for Henderson, he was by far my favorite character in The Boy on Cinnamon Street. He was adorably dorky, fun, positive, and supportive. Really, what girl doesn't need a boy in their life like that?

Although The Boy on Cinnamon Street by Phoebe Stone is a very short and fast paced novel, I found myself easily connecting with it's characters and greatly sympathizing with Louise. Readers who love contemporary novels will certainly find themselves connecting with Louise's story.

A Fun and Mysterious Novel

Loosely Inspired by The Secret Garden

As a child, The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett was one of my absolute most favorite tales. It was one that I read over and over again more times then I can recall, turning it's pages with excitement. Imagine my excitement when I came across a pitch for Ellen Potter's upcoming middle grade novel The Humming Room! With a pitch that describes the novel as inspired by my beloved childhood novel The Secret Garden, it was an absolute must read for me! Although typically I do read mostly young adult and adult novels, I do on the rare occasion come across a middle grade title that appeals to me (ie; Liesl & Po by Lauren Oliver). Without any previous experiences with Ellen Potter's writing, though I'd heard wonderful things about her previous MG The Kneebone Boy, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. However, when I began to turn it's pages, I was pleasantly surprised at how easily Ellen pulled me in!

The Humming Room, which loosely uses The Secret Garden for inspiration, follows the story of Roo Fanshaw, the only daughter in a regrettably unstable household. When her parents are murdered, an uncle she's never heard of or met decides to take her in, moving her into his monstrous and mysterious mansion. At the house, she meets an interesting boy and uncovers secrets to the mansion and her uncle's past that she hadn't expected.

Ellen Potter certainly has a knack for telling a mystery that is pulling for both younger and older readers. I couldn't help sharing the story with my niece, who just now is beginning to share my love of reading. We both agreed that we absolutely loved Roo Fanshaw, who had an admirable curiosity to her personality that was both fun and entertaining to read. However, despite Roo's admirable curiosity, Roo also had a sad and timid side to herself that made my heart wrench in sympathy. She was a character I wanted to hug and comfort, yet push to succeed. Without a doubt, Roo presented quite a bit of growth throughout the story. In addition, I think it best to note that although this middle grade novel does feature a mystery, you'd be glad to know that it isn't quite as predictable as you'd initially think. In fact, I was quite surprised!

The Humming Room by Ellen Potter is a wonderfully mysterious novel that's perfect for both younger and older readers. Readers will find themselves identifying and sympathizing with Roo.

Most Enticing Dystopian Novel I've Read to This Date!

Without a doubt, Julianna Baggott's Pure is the most enticing dystopian novel I've read to this date! Admittedly, I've never read Baggott's other titles, but Pure's striking post-apocalyptic synopsis instantly drew me in!

Julianna Baggott's Pure starts off with two key point of views, that of Pressia (outside the Dome) and Patridge (inside the Dome). Life outside the Dome is treacherous! After the dreadful detonations years ago, when Pressia was still only a child, the world outside has crumbled to the ground and has been infested by horrendous creatures called Dusts. In addition, the detonations brought on an onslaught of terrible mutations to the survivors, some of which who suffered inanimate objects being permanently molded to their bodies. Pressia is one of these people, with a doll's head on her hand and a mere sock to cover up it's existence. Enter Patridge, a resident living inside the Dome, an isolated community that thrives on education and science, not to mention completely mutation-free. However, not everything is perfect for Patridge in the Dome, he yearns to find his mother and risks leaving the Dome. There, he meets Pressia.

Julianna Baggott's dialogue in Pure is unbelievably unique, but regrettably very slow paced. In fact, I had originally picked up the novel to read during the Summer 2011 when it first arrived for review, only to put it back down halfway through and pick it up once again a few weeks before release day. With that said, however, when diving back into Pure, I instantly found myself falling in love with the story once more. Pressia's narrative voice was unbelievably real! She wasn't someone I could connect or identify with, but my sympathy grew the more I learned about her. Patridge was an instant hit for me. For whatever reason, I found myself connecting with him and his pressured lifestyle a lot more then I did with Pressia. Needless to say, Patridge was by far my favorite character.

Learning about the Pures and those who live outside of the Dome was some-what of a heartbreaking story. I felt disgusted at times and ashamed of the Dome residents for their lack of humanity and compassion. Moving on, I couldn't help feeling that the novel itself was a major illusion all on it's own. The story felt like it was moving into hundreds of different directions, however as I reached the end it all seemed to mesh together so well, revealing an enticing climax that made me eager for the next installment in the Pure series.

It wasn't until I nearly reached about halfway through Julianna Baggott's Pure that I finally realized the meaning behind the front and back cover design. As all readers know, the front of the cover features a flawless blue butterfly in what looks like a dome. In my perspective, I find that it represents the pures within the dome, who are without mutation. On the back of the cover is a butterfly outside of the dome, flying around with trinkets and other things attached to it due to the mutation, which I believe to represent those who live outside the dome and suffered the mutations from the detonations. Isn't it wonderful how publishers/cover artists blend in aspects of the story and represent them on covers? Without a doubt, I have some serious cover love for Pure!

In the end, I couldn't help falling for Julianna Baggott's Pure! It's novels that are as beautifully written as Pure that make you realize how "dumbed-down" most young adult novels really are. With that said, Pure will make you think and hope right to the last page.

A Fun and Laid Back Fantasy Novel!

2012 looks like a very big year for translated novels, with releases like The Storyteller by Antonia Michaelis, Arcadia Awakens by Kai Meyer, and now Heaven by Christoph Marzi.

Heaven by Christoph Marzi begins on a very exciting note. Heaven, the mystery girl in the novel, is attacked on a rooftop by two suspicious looking individuals. She is ruthlessly tackled to the floor and has her still beating heart taken from her chest with sharp and peculiar looking tools. The odd thing about this encounter is, there's no evidence on her chest of this happening, but she remembers it happening vividly. She then runs into David Pettyfer, begging him for safety and help in getting her heart back. David instantly finds the distraught girl strange, wondering how on earth a girl can possibly still be alive without a heart. In need of proof, David feels her pulse...and discovers that there is, indeed, no heartbeat coming from the frightened girl. Together, David goes on an adventure in search of Heaven's heart, while also learning more about the mysterious girl.

The first thing I noticed when diving into Heaven was Christoph Marzi's wonderfully detailed descriptions of London. As many of my readers are aware, I absolutely adore the architecture in London and have always been fascinated by the setting, whether the story take place in the past or present. Moving forward, I quite enjoyed Heaven's personality. She was a big mystery throughout most of the novel, the author only revealing little snippets of her life randomly throughout the story. David Pettyfer, as well, was an interesting character. As the story is told through his perspective, I found myself connecting with him a lot more then I did with Heaven. However, I was a little surprised at how easily David believed Heaven's story in regards to having no heart. Personally, I wouldn't have believed such a ridiculous story, but I guess that's what made David so interesting and unique, his trust in a complete stranger.

As much of a mystery Heaven was, I couldn't find myself gripping the pages with anticipation. It felt more like a smooth unfurling of events with no spontaneous spikes of excitement or action. In fact, most of the "action" was easily predictable, which I found rather unfortunate. In regards to translation, I think the translator behind Heaven by Christoph Marzi did a fantastic job! In other translated novels, I've always felt that things didn't settle very well with each other, almost a feeling of something being lost in the translation. However, with Heaven I felt nothing of the sort, it was very refreshing!

Heaven by Christoph Marzi was a fun and laid back fantasy about a girl without a heart. Recommended for readers who adore mysterious fantasy novels with brave and determined male protagonists.

With eyes that constantly change from gray to green to a honey-coated shade of brown and an ability to feel exactly what other people are feeling, the concept of obtaining closeness is more of a fable than a reality. Although her eyes are beautiful, their constant shift in color instills a sense of fear within other people and causes them to look away. Bijou’s premonitions, blackouts, and semi-prophetic dreams of a faceless boy don’t help her social musings either. Regardless, she decides to attend the local high school. Bijou is immediately introduced to Sebastian Sinjin, a quirky and unusually beautiful boy who doesn’t seem to belong in a high school in nowhere Maryland. Sebastian is also special. Instead of looking away from Bijou, he makes direct eye contact with her. And when he shakes Bijou’s hand something dark and familiar to awaken within her as an electric shock surges through her body. Bijou soon finds herself deeply attracted to Sebastian, who remains aloof and often acts like Bijou doesn’t exist. Despite the pains of having her first real crush, Bijou makes friends quickly and excels in all of her classes…well, all except for Mythology with Mr. Jennings. Mr. Jennings’ class starts off great with endless discussions of djinn and how they conceal themselves from the human eye, but things soon take a turn for the worse when the stories of the mythical creatures begin to take shape in Bijou’s life.

Dear Sang Kromah, you've got the good stuff!

With a fairly open synopsis that doesn't lead the reader astray from it's lethal mention of mystery, Concealed by Sang Kromah is certainly one novel that will surprise you. Did it surprise me? Yes! In fact, after reading the synopsis and agreeing to read and review Concealed as part of the blog tour, I was completely shocked to find something completely different then what I had originally anticipated.

Meet sixteen year old Bijou, a girl with an adorable name and a personality I couldn't help loving! After moving to a new school and town with her nomadic grandmother, Bijou instantly feels out of place. Being moved around and home schooled for most of her life, it's reasonable that Bijou would be reluctant to associate with her fellow peers. However, there's more to Bijou then meets the eye, and after meeting the gorgeous Sebastian, things for her finally begin to shift.

Dear Sang Kromah, you've got the good stuff! As I mentioned earlier on in my review, I had absolutely no idea what to expect from Concealed. What I found upon diving into the novel was a laid back telling of a girl finally getting the chance to go to a real school and make friends. However, it was incredibly surprising how Sang quickly turned the plot around. I certainly hadn't expected the plot twists. As I mentioned before, I absolutely loved Bijou! She was a fun narrative voice that I easily connected with. Despite her fun voice, I found myself sympathizing with her wariness. She lacked confidence and courage, which was fairly heartbreaking, but her inner strength was incredibly admirable! Leave it to Sang to write a character that's real!

Sang Kromah's Concealed will have you latching to it's pages desperate to learn more about her characters and more about the wonderful world she's created. With pulling writing and a protagonist like Bijou, you just can't go wrong! I can only hope for more from Sang!

My Path to Publication

Growing up, I was told countless tales of powerful mystical beings from my parents’ native land of Liberia. These beings went by many names, disguising their true identity from human eyes. But generally, they were referred to as Djinn. While reminiscing on the many stories of dwarfish baby snatchers, unearthly beauties with fish tails, beings that walked by night, and some who drank blood, and shapeshifters, I decided to delve deeper into the word “Djinn”. Google led me to similar stories from various countries of creatures that went by other names—not only African nations—but most of them were about magic lamps and that wasn’t exactly what I sought. Eventually, my dad pointed me to the Latin root word, “Janna” which means to conceal, and perfectly describes these beings that concealed their true identity from human eyes. But what if there was one human—different from all others—with the ability to see what wasn’t meant to be seen by human eyes? Someone not quite like them, but not exactly one of us either?

As a child, there was one story that stood out to me about a strong-willed, feisty, mischievous girl named Femeni who escaped—what should have been certain death at the hands of a notorious Djinn. After hearing the story, I always wondered what happened to Femeni, and did she have any other encounters with the DjinnFemeni that helped her escape the Djinn? What if Femeni had a child, would there be something special about that child as well? These questions gave birth to Concealed.

I try extremely hard to separate myself from my characters, but I can definitely relate to the characters for the simple fact that the story takes place at my high school. The most challenging part of writing this book was becoming a sixteen year old girl once again. The story is written in first person narrative, so I really wanted the writing to be authentic. So there were many days where I would isolate myself from the rest of the world, so I could stay in Bijou’s mindset. And then, all of the research and legends I created about the Djinn had me scared senseless at times. I had created a world that had become so real to me that I started to identify signs of their presence in everyday people. It sounds crazy, but I used to scare the hell out of myself.

It took me about three months to write the manuscript, which I finished about a week before I graduated from Graduate School. Three months later, I signed with TLT Publishing. And the rest is history.

Sang Kromah grew up in the sleepy suburb of Sykseville, Maryland, the setting of her debut novel Concealed. Born a storyteller, Kromah would run away with the words, creating her own stories with the mythical, alluring creatures in her head. Among the fables of night-walkers, sirens that lived in the ocean and beings that drank blood, one that stood out to Kromah was that of the “Djinn.” Delving deeper into the word, her research led her to similar stories from various countries of creatures that went by different names, but most of them were about magic lamps and three wishes, which wasn’t the direction she wanted to take. While writing the novel, Sang became so absorbed by all the research and legends that she created that she started to see signs of these mythical beings in other people. So real was the world she dreamed up that she would startle herself while taking the train or walking to get coffee! While Concealed is Kromah’s debut novel, she is no stranger to writing. She freelances for a variety of jobs, being a Copywriter, Editor and Public Relations Specialist. Kromah also, interned at Seventeen Magazine. While most would think that that would be enough to be kept busy, Kromah also models in her “spare time,” with notable appearances in Essence Magazine and Jet Magazine.

Like any well-rounded New Yorker, Kromah is a quirky film-fanatic and adventurous foodie, with a well stamped passport and a keen fashion sense. Her greatest achievement thus far is having written Concealed. She remembers when as a kid, whenever she’d have to introduce herself in class, she always said she would, one day, write the next Great American Novel. Kromah’s not the type to go back on her word.

Kromah is planning to write a whole series around the plot of Concealed.

The Way We Fall Launch Recap

What better way to spend a Saturday afternoon then to attend a launch party right here in Toronto?! That, in fact my dearest Cupcakes, is exactly what I did. I met up with the wonderful Michele @ Just A Lil Lost, Christa @ Hooked on Books, and Evie @ Bookish, and we all made our way to the quaint venue of Bakka-Phoenix Books.

Although I'd known of Bakka-Phoenix's existence, I'd yet to had gone inside. It was wonderful, and I absolutely adored their teen section! (They actually had several novels that I'd been struggling to find at Chapters/Indigo/Coles). Without a doubt, a wonderful and beautiful set up inside. I'd kill for those shelves!

At the time of our arrival, not many of the launch attendees had arrived. In fact, including myself, Michele, Christa, and Evie, I'd say we were only about 8-9. However, the crowd quickly grew as we put away our coats and delved into some treats and drinks! Little before 3pm, we were finally met by Sara @ Geek Girl's Book Blog, Brenna @ Ever After Esther, Angel @ Mermaid Visions, and Audrey @ Holes in My Brain. Finally 3:00pm arrived and Megan called for our attention at the front of the room. She stood by a table with her novel Give up the Ghost, and her latest novel The Way We Fall, beautifully pyramided on display. Also on the table, Megan provided attendees with a selection of The Way We Fall bookmarks, fridge magnets, pens, and of course....hand sanitizer! (I absolutely loved this idea!)

After introducing herself and speaking about her reasons for writing The Way We Fall, Megan read a fun snippet from her novel, one of which was quite funny (one of my favorites). With that, Megan got to signing our novels. It was wonderful meeting Megan!

Megan happily signed my copies of Give up the Ghost, my review copy of The Way We Fall, and my gorgeous (and awesomely yellow) finished copy of The Way We Fall! After taking a photo with Megan (thank you to Michele for taking it for me!), and playing photographer myself, I'm happy to say that I had a wonderful time at Megan's launch party for The Way We Fall!

Lenobia's Story is Finally Told

House of Night fans - it's finally here! Lenobia's story leading up to being marked as a fledgling. As House of Night readers know, there has been very little revealed on the horse instructor throughout the series. In Lenobia's Vow, the second installment in the House of Night novella series, her story is finally told.

Upon diving into Lenobia's Vow, I once again found that it featured beautiful hand drawn artwork just as Dragon's Oath did. Each piece depicted the most emotionally revealing scene in the chapter, at times featuring the ruthless and cruel Bishop, and at others showing Lenobia at a crucial moment. Lenobia's story, which begins in a small southern country and ends in the beautiful New Orleans, was incredibly emotional! After reading Destined, the 9th novel in the House of Night series, I finally began to understand Lenobia's feelings throughout. With that mentioned, I highly suggest that readers first read Destined before reading Lenobia's Vow, the emotional impact is far more stronger.

In comparison to it's novella predecessor Dragon's Oath, to which I was dissatisfied, Lenobia's Vow was a story filled with depth, emotion, and understanding of the times. Leading up to the crucial moment in which Lenobia is finally marked as a fledgling, the story was a roller coaster of hope and sadness. Moving forward, I can only hope for great things to come from the next installment in the novella series, Neferet's Curse. Although Neferet is not a very loved character, I'm still looking forward to learning more about her roots.

I have yet to read my copy of Virtuosity by Jessica Martinez, though I've read wonderful things about it, so I'm not quite sure what to expect from Jessica in her upcoming novel The Space Between Us. Despite that, it does sound like an interesting read. What do you think?

Born Wicked is the Beginning to a Very Promising Series

Born Wicked by Jessica Spotswood is one novel you do not want to go into unprepared, trust me! It caught me by surprise. You see, witches and I rarely get along. They rarely get on my good side. Of course by that I mean that novels about witches almost never turn out to be very enjoyable. With that said, Born Wicked was one of the few that made it's way into my heart, one that I couldn't help falling head over heels for!

Born Wicked by Jessica Spotswood features an interesting and captivating historical setting. It's doubtful that I'll ever hate a historical setting, I've always been one to get completely involved in them while reading, capturing and absorbing each detail given by the author in their writing. Jessica Spotswood also introduces an interesting character in Cate Cahill. Cate is one of three sisters, all beautiful, educated, and witches. However, they live in a world where things are controlled by the brotherhood and witches are considered evil. Keeping their identities a secret has often proved to be a challenge. Unfortunately, Cate is soon forced to pick between marriage and joining the sisterhood, both options which would mean abandoning her sisters.

In regards to Born Wicked, unfortunately there isn't much I can divulge in my review without slapping it with spoiler tags. However, in regards to Cate as a narrative voice, I found myself loving every minute of it! She was a bright character, one that was eager and observant, who tossed me into a whirl wind of emotion. She's one character that easily captivated me - I loved it! Finn Belastra, who is mentioned in the synopsis to have a forbidden romance with Cate, had an adorable and loving personality that had me swooning like a love-sick school girl! I easily became jealous of Cate, Finn was an honorable male counterpart with spunk. However, despite my utmost love for the dialogue and characters, Born Wicked did have one thing missing.

Born Wicked's biggest downfall all comes down to it's lack of action and anticipation. There was nothing remotely exciting for me to look forward in the story. However, that isn't to say that Born Wicked was not a pleasant read. It's completely the opposite, actually. Born Wicked by Jessica Spotswood quickly made it's way to my list of favorites immediately. As I mentioned before, Born Wicked severely lacked action, but it did make up for it with insane plot developments and romance that could, in most cases, literally make your heart beat out of your chest (it's dangerous!).

Born Wicked by Jessica Spotswood may lack the action all readers look forward to in paranormal novels, however, it did bring forth an intriguing dialogue that instantly captivated me. Born Wicked is one debut all readers need to add to their reading lists immediately!

Heartwarming and Bone-chilling

When it comes to a novel, first impressions are everything. Article 5 immediately introduced me to a world where the freedom we are fortunate enough to have in the present day is gone. Now, you know just as well as I do that an aspect like that is far from uncommon in the post-apocalyptic genre. What makes novels in the genre unique, however, is whether or not the author has the ability to weave an exciting and worthwhile dialogue that easily sets itself apart from the others. Article 5 succeeded in that endeavor. Meet Ember Miller, a seventeen year old in a futuristic society where woman subservience is enforced by it's rather questionable statutes. Living with her mother, Ember finds herself living in the society's shadows, keeping a low profile. However, when her mother is suddenly arrested and Ember is taken to a rehabilitation center by Chase Jennings, the only boy she's ever loved, Ember takes it upon herself to escape and save her mother.

Bone chilling yet heart warming, an odd combination, wouldn't you agree? However, as odd as it might sound, it perfectly describes the events of Article 5 by Kristen Simmons. It's been a long time since a post-apocalyptic novel has shaken me so greatly! (Think: Delirium by Lauren Oliver). Woman subservience, though as common as it is in post-apocalyptic titles, is never an easy subject to read. By nature, I'm a fierce person who stands for independence, and I believe that's why I connected with Ember so easily. She wasn't someone who kept her mouth shut and submitted (Thank God!) but she wasn't someone to stupidly leap before looking. She was a keen observer of her surroundings and her options; a survivor. Chase Jennings, the boy who is introduced as the one Ember has always loved, was someone I couldn't figure out in the beginning. I wouldn't say his persona is mysterious because, frankly, he was rather transparent in his intentions right from the beginning. However, moving deeper into Article 5, I found myself connecting more and more with Chase. I started to find myself seeing things through his eyes and understanding his behavior despite the solo perspective of Ember.

[Slight spoiler below: Nothing extreme, but be cautious]
Speaking of Chase, I was surprised to find that there were two sides to him. There was the present Chase that readers were introduced to at the moment of the arrest, and the Chase from the past. The Chase from the past, one that was significantly different than present Chase, was clued into the storyline in mini-flashback intervals throughout the novel. Readers, you'll find yourself loving these flashbacks! I know I did!

Kristen Simmons is a wonderful talent! I'm not often gripped by an author's writing, it's usually the story that pulls me in. However, with Kristen Simmons' writing, I was instantly pulled into the story and easily envisioned Ember's surroundings as if they were my very own. This may sound a little too hopeful, but I can easily imagine Article 5 on the big screen. The action was intense, the drama beyond emotional, and the development completely unpredictable.

Article 5 by Kristen Simmons will not disappoint. You'll be instantly pulled into a futuristic world that awkwardly steps into the past with issues like woman subservience. Readers who love the post-apocalyptic genre will find themselves reading this gem in one sitting.

I'm always amazed at the unique ways authors contort undead supernatural beings into their story lines. Of course, I don't mean contort in an unpleasant way, far from it actually. When I first dove into Dead Beautiful, the first novel in the series, I was amazed to find that deep in it's heart the story was about zombies. Though, to be completely fair in that labeling, they aren't exactly the flesh eating, brain munching zombies we've been introduced to in other novels in the genre. These zombies, or rather undead, are as human-like as they come, however the unique twist to their existence is that they are forced to roam the earth in search for their souls in order to become un-undead, if you catch my drift. With that mention, the introduction of Renee Winters is quite essential.

The Dead Beautiful series follows the story of Renee Winters, a girl who had led her life as normally as any other teenager her age. However, when she discovers the bodies of her parents in a forest, things instantly take a turn for the worst. At first glance it looks like a double murder, however authorities quickly speculate otherwise. This is when Renee's life is turned upside down and learns that just like her parents, she is a monitor. A monitor, as described in the novels, is someone who keeps the undead under control (think of them as police for the undead).

Life Eternal follows shortly after the dramatic events at Gottfried Academy, which occurred in Dead Beautiful. Before I dive in further on my thoughts on Life Eternal, I recommend that all readers interested in reading Life Eternal please read Dead Beautiful first. It's very essential if you don't want to get lost amongst the drama of Life Eternal. Moving on, Life Eternal readers are once again reintroduced to Renee Winters, a new monitor who unfortunately went through quite a few frightening ordeals at Gottfried Academy. In my perspective, I didn't notice much of a growth between this Renee and the Renee from Dead Beautiful. You'd think she'd mature a little more after everything that happened in Dead Beautiful, however I was surprised to find that she was still the same.

Further into the novel, I was surprised to discover that the familiar setting of Gottfried Academy in Maine quickly shifted over to one that I'm actually a little familiar with, Montreal Canada. I found the setting change to be a pleasant breath of fresh air! Regrettably, I've read far too many novels with a Maine setting, and over time they've all meshed together into a hopeless clump. However, with the switch to Montreal, I found that the story involving Renee grew extensively, the plot getting thicker with mystery and suspense. Of course, readers might be curious as to whether or not Dante makes appearances in Life Eternal. Luckily, he does, but that's as far as I'm willing to divulge without spoiling the dialogue.

Life Eternal by Yvonne Woon was a beautiful and exciting sequel to the beloved novel Dead Beautiful. I was instantly impressed at how easily Yvonne Woon managed to pull me into the story again. With that said, I'm exceptionally eager to read what happens next for Renee Winters!

Review: Harbinger by Sara Wilson Etienne

A Gem of a Mystery

*Glares at the cover of Harbinger....and falls off her chair*
I'm sorry but, I'm absolutely in love with the cover of Harbinger! Upon it's arrival in late October, I was instantly enamored. Presented uniquely in the form of a tarot card, the artwork featured on Harbinger is eye catching and extremely pulling. To be honest, I don't know how I was able to set the novel aside for review for as long as I did! However, when I did...I couldn't take my eyes off the cover. I found myself constantly taking sneak peeks at it between chapters. That, my friends, is die-hard cover love! Kudos to the creators behind the masterpiece.

Moving on, I wasn't quite sure what to expect from Harbinger when I first received it for review. The synopsis was extremely pulling, however books shrouded with mystery don't always turn out to be as exciting as they are pitched. However, Sara Wilson Etienne's Harbinger instantly started off with a bang! Harbinger paints the picture of a helpless teen named Faye, who unfortunately is sent off to Holbrook Academy by her parents who worry about her mentality and safety. Holbrook Academy is a refuge for teens struggling to cope with reality. However, as lovely as that sounds, Holbrook Academy is built in the middle of nowhere, it's buildings looking similar to what you'd see in a prison. "Students" of Holbrook Academy are forced to take a variety of exotic and oddball "courses" that will teach them how to behave and be productive in society. Being the fierce protagonist that she is, Faye doesn't stand for it and instantly looks for a way out.

Faye, upon her introduction, was a fairly peculiar character. She had a fascinating calm with animal bones that left me gawking with bewilderment and curiosity. Despite that rather bone chilling characteristic, I rather enjoyed reading her perspective. She was real, fun, and easy to connect with. In addition to Faye's character, there were several others at Holbrook Academy that made the story so much more fun and exciting! Each chapter revealed something interesting about them and lead me deeper into the mystery behind the academy.

Fingerless Gloves - Harbinger Makes Them Sexy

Now, let me tell you something about fingerless gloves; they aren't always sexy. However, there's a particular character in Harbinger that is, literally, bringing sexy back. (No kidding, he seriously does!) Introducing Kel, a mysterious hottie who loves to wear black...and fingerless gloves. I'm not sure how Sara Wilson Etienne did it but Kel seriously entranced me. Mind you, that is very difficult to do. The last author and character to do that to me, and I mean seriously make me fall in love with their male character, was Cassandra Clare's Mr.Desirable himself...MAGNUS BANE. (Yes, you heard me. I'm bringing Magnus into this!)

Harbinger by Sara Wilson Etienne is a stunning debut, with a lethal dose of mystery and killer supernatural suspense! It's a pity that Harbinger is a standalone. After reaching it's conclusion, I found myself being eager for more!

I hope everyone's had a wonderful week! Toronto weather has been insane! It's been raining, then snowing, and then raining again. Every now and then, when you're an avid reader as I am, you come across a novel that leaves you speechless...and not in a good way. With an interesting premise as New Girl by Paige Harbison, I was sure that it would be a novel that I'd love, one that would possibly wind up with my rushing to the local book store and purchasing a finished copy. Unfortunately, it didn't impact me as much as I had hoped. If you've ever read a novel that left you speechless, and not in the most positive of ways, then you'll know how difficult it is to write a review on it.

The New Girl by Paige Harbison is uniquely told through two perspectives, that of "New Girl" and Becca. You may be wondering why I refer to the new girl as "New Girl". Unfortunately, the reader isn't told "New Girls" name until much further into the novel, which in my personal opinion frustrated me quite a bit. Moving on, New Girl starts off with "New Girl's" admittance to Manderly Academy, a boarding school that her parents have been sending applications to every year since she was 13 years old. The reader at the beginning of the novel is clued into why "New Girl" had shown such interest in attending Manderly Academy. It all started with Harry Potter and her fascination in attending a boarding school like Hogwarts. As a Harry Potter fan, I found this particular notion absolutely adorable! Moving on, when "New Girl" finally starts attending Manderly Academy, she quickly learns of Becca Normandy, the girl she's replaced at the academy.

Upon diving into New Girl by Paige Harbison, I quickly discovered that the story line was extremely fun. It started off on a very positive note, mildly introducing me to both "New Girl" and Becca, who both portrayed significantly different personalities in contrast with the other. Moving further into the novel, I found myself greatly enjoying Paige's writing and the overwhelming mysterious dialogue. I immediately found myself having several curious questions about "New Girl" and Becca, and fortunately Paige fed my desire for answers. Unfortunately, as I mentioned earlier in my review, New Girl left me speechless and not in the most positive of ways. Despite my love for the two protagonists, I found myself being unfazed by many of the novel's events. Regrettably, nothing shook me, shocked me, or excited me. Needless to say, I was very disappointed that New Girl didn't work out for me as much as I had hoped.

New Girl by Paige Harbison was a fun and mysterious read, who's pitch instantly pulled me in. Unfortunately, confusion and other circumstances contributed to my lack of enjoyment overall. However, with that said, I'd still recommend New Girl to readers who enjoyed reads similar to Imaginary Girls by Nova Ren Suma.

You'll Laugh and You'll Cry

I suggest you prepare yourself with tissues

Like many other instances, there's no denying that I was pulled into Jess Rothenberg's The Catastrophic History of You and Me due to its gorgeous cover, though it should be noted that the cover was mildly different then the one featured on the finished product. Either way, I found myself reading the premise and gaining an overwhelming curiosity in regards to Brie. First and foremost I wondered, how can one truly die of a broken heart? Is it really possible? Secondly, I wanted to know what led Brie to her death, what caused the aforementioned broken heart that killed her.

There were several things that surprised me when I dove into Catastrophic History of You and Me; the narration was fun and easy to read, the novel was divided into the emotional stages of a dying person, and the chapter titles all featured the title of a song that strongly resonated with the events in the chapter. (Jess Rothenberg includes a glossary of the song titles at the back of the book so you can create your own Catastrophic play list!) When an author goes out of their way to add a little bit of themselves into their novel, I find that I tend to resonate with it a lot more then I do with others. That's what Jess did, and from what I gathered, Jess is a comical genius! (I haven't giggled this much while reading a novel for a very long time).

Catastrophic's Brie and Patrick were an excellent duo! It's not everyday that you come across two characters of the opposite sex that mesh together so well. Brie, though visibly immature and at times ignorant, worked well with Patrick's laid back and clear minded personality. Whether the moment called for humor or called for something heart wrenching, Patrick and Brie always brought out the emotion behind it. With the mention of funny and heartbreaking scenes, The Catastrophic History of You and Me was a whirlwind of emotion. There were a few "what the heck just happened" and "did I just read that correctly" moments that completely caught me off guard. To be honest, I was quite shocked by them and didn't really know how to react. In fact, there's one scene in particular, a little after page 300, in which I had to pause and read back a few paragraphs just to make sure I'd read it correctly. I won't spoil it for you, however, but it definitely gave me a "what the heck just happened" moment.

Jess Rothenberg's The Catastrophic History of You and Me is fun and fearless! Recommended for readers who love emotional reads with a lethal dose of humor.

In fact, the ONLY changes are the background and text placement. Personally, I'm very pleased with it. Unfortunately, the plain backgrounds just didn't appeal to me originally but I'm definitely loving this change!

An Interesting Start to

The Cambion Chronicles

It's books like Living Violet that easily surprise me when they start off with the introduction of a mysterious character. Mr.Mystery behind Living Violet by Jaime Reed: Caleb Baker. He's got it all; the looks, the charm, and the ability to make you do whatever he wants. Samara Marshall, of course, becomes intrigued by this and decides to discover the truth no matter what the cost.

The novel starts off with the introduction of Samara Marshall, a fun and laid back protagonist with an eager personality. It was fun reading from the perspective of a character of another ethnicity for once. It was unbelievably refreshing! Samara Marshall had a wonderful voice that easily floated off the pages. Needless to say, Sam was an easy character to connect with. Caleb Baker, the aforementioned Mr.Mystery, wasn't someone I connected with, unfortunately. He was an interesting character, don't get me wrong, but he just didn't seem as attractive of a character than he originally did in the synopsis for Living Violet. Furthermore, I was not a big fan of the relationship between Mia, Sam's best friend, and Dougie (It just didn't look very healthy from my perspective).

As all mysteries do, Living Violet left me confused for most of the novel. However, when the cloud of mystery finally subsided, I was very surprised at what I found! Readers, Jaime Reed will certainly keep you on your toes with this particular twist to the story. Personally, I did not see it coming at all! Moving on, I additionally found myself loving Jaime Reed's excellent humor, which she displayed through her writing and protagonist, Sam. Unfortunately, as I reached the end of Living Violet, I found myself dissatisfied. Although there were several things I loved about Living Violet, the turn of events just didn't settle very well for me in the end.

Living Violet by Jaime Reed was a fun read with an equally fun protagonist! Although Living Violet didn't work out for me exactly the way I had hoped, I'm still eagerly looking forward to what Jaime Reed has in store in further installments to the Cambion Chronicles!

SYMPTOMS

With a pitch like that of Megan Crewe's The Way We Fall, how could I possibly resist? Since early 2011, I've been a very big reader and lover of post-apocalyptic fiction. I've delved into them like an addict on the verge of a withdrawal, I just couldn't get enough. With a synopsis that quickly reminded me of the 2011 film Contagion, I could not wait to see how Megan Crewe would deliver the story.

QUARANTINE

The Way We Fall tells the story of Kaelyn, a sixteen year old teen who lives with her family on an island in Northern Canada. Leo, Kaelyn's best friend, leaves the island for the mainland. Upon his leaving, an unexpected development takes place - a deadly virus is sweeping through the island. It begins with an incurable itch, only to develop into a fever, an onslaught of hallucinations, and then death. With a father for a doctor, Kaelyn finds herself in the middle of the disaster, witnessing first hand at how quickly it kills friends, neighbors, and the people she loves.

MORTALITY

The Way We Fall by Megan Crewe was uniquely told through a series of journal entries, the protagonist's direct telling of the occurring events during the epidemic. Most of the journal entries, in fact, were addressed to Leo, the aforementioned best friend who left the island. I loved this particular aspect to the story because not only did it help me connect with Kaelyn on a realistic note, but it helped me capture every emotion she passed down through her writing. Some of the novel's events were frightening, heartwarming, and heartbreaking. Agreeably so, the emotion behind The Way We Fall was incredibly strong and impacted me greatly, instantly pulling me into the story right from the beginning.

Compared to other post-apocalyptic titles, The Way We Fall came across as a much lighter and straightforward telling. As I've noticed in other titles in the genre, most are muddled with an endless stream of unrelated events that almost always take away from the story. However, with The Way We Fall, I found that the events and relationships were developed at a realistic pace that didn't have me shaking my head in disbelief. If you've ever read a novel about a world that has already succumbed to a deadly disease, but have always wondered about it's beginning stages, I'd highly recommend settling down with The Way We Fall by Megan Crewe.

The Way We Fall by Megan Crewe was realistic, evenly paced, and intriguing. A recommended read for science fiction readers and Canadians! (eh?)

Is So Much More Then Another Pretty Cover

I'm a horrible person! There, I admit it! I'm a cover sleaze. I am unfaithful to beautiful YA covers everywhere! One moment I find myself lusting after one gorgeous book cover, and the next moment I'm drooling over another. Dearest Jodi, Incarnate is my latest notch on the belt. It's absolutely gorgeous, I highly doubt anyone would ever disagree. What could have been a boring cover, featuring another glam shot, is instead beautifully decorated with a butterfly in what looks like a mask. Needless to say, come release day...I'll be running off to buy myself a gorgeous finished copy!

Incarnate by Jodi Meadows was an instant sell for me. It's not everyday a reader comes across a novel about reincarnation that sounds so incredible! In Incarnate, readers meet Ana, a newsoul in a world filled with old souls. After being branded a nosoul, Ana is put in seclusion from the outside world. In search of answers as to why she's a newsoul, Ana leaves in search of Heart. On her way there, and amidst being attacked by a dreaded sylph, Ana meets Sam, someone who unexpectedly accepts Ana for who she is.

I loved Ana! Brave, charismatic, eager, REAL; all words I'd use to describe Ana. Upon beginning Incarnate by Jodi Meadows, I quickly discovered how fun a narrative voice Ana truly was. I felt as though I was thinking on the same wavelength with her. Unfortunately, I couldn't predict any of the events in the novel despite my connection with Ana. Though, that's not to say that's a bad thing. With unpredictability comes intense excitement, and that's exactly what Jodi Meadows delivered with Incarnate.

Incarnate features a fresh and interesting world setting, one who's history could trap a reader into a trance of endless thought for hours. Reincarnation, as I mentioned before, is a difficult subject for me to read. I've come across several novels that ignorantly flail it around to create rather unbecoming romances that end with similarly unbecoming endings. With Incarnate, however, I was instantly enamored! Yes, there is romance in Incarnate, but it's so much more then that. There's an overwhelming feeling of mystery and suspense that lures the reader into playing a game of detective. There's so much more to Incarnate then meets the eye; it's incredibly rewarding!

Dear Jodi, I need mittens! Warm, fuzzy mittens! Why? You left me in the cold, shivering for more, with that ending. How do you expect me to survive until book two?!

Irregardless, Incarnate by Jodi Meadows is NOT just another pretty cover being used to lure you in. This time the gorgeous cover captures the true beauty within it's pages. I highly recommend Incarnate by Jodi Meadows to all readers who love unique world settings and fantasy.

Ditched:A Love Story by Robin Mellom Was

Fun, Fun, FUN!

Looking at the cover of Robin Mellom's teen debut novel, Ditched, leaves the reader with countless questions;

What on earth happened to this poor girl's prom dress?
Where did she get THAT dress? It's so 1980's!
What kind of trouble does one have to get into to come out looking like that...and still have a positive expression on their face?

Those were all questions running through my mind as I stared at the novel, completely oblivious as to what I'd discover once opened.

Luckily, in this case, the cover portrayed exactly the story Robin Mellom was pitching! Meet Justina Griffith, a high school senior dreaming big for her high school prom. Can you blame her? Didn't you ever dream of having the perfect dress and the hottest guy in school for a prom date? Unexpectedly, Justina gets asked to the prom by her best friend Ian, something she clearly wasn't expecting. The night of the prom, things get out of control, and Justina winds up being ditched. Now standing outside a 7-Eleven, Justina takes readers on a dramatic and downright hilarious re-telling of what led her to that moment.

First and foremost, I have to point out that I absolutely loved the novel layout for Ditched! Upon opening up the novel, I discovered that it was uniquely divided into different sections. Each section pertained to a different stain on Justina's prom dress or item on, or in some cases not on, her person. I found that this very aspect added quite a bit of fun to my reading experience and helped me identify with Justina as a realistic protagonist quite a bit more then I would have otherwise.

Predictability, unfortunately, is at an all time high in Ditched. However, it isn't to say that I didn't enjoy the novel. Justina's story still managed to keep me on my toes despite it's obvious outcome. Speaking of Justina, I instantly found her to be a fun narrative voice. She was lighthearted and realistic, her overall emotional personality being quite contagious. I can't imagine myself reading a better protagonist for the genre! Ian Clark, Justina's best friend and the ditcher, was a mystery (No surprise there). There was very little told about him at the beginning, however, as the novel progressed, I was treated to little snippets of why Justina was enamored with him. Overall, I'd best describe the events of Ditched to be fun and spontaneous.

With all that said, I highly recommend Ditched:A Love Story by Robin Mellom to young adult readers who love fun, light hearted reads with a dash of romance.
